On this page, we show you some of the waters near Austin where you can catch trout, especially during the colder months.
Texas Parks & Wildlife (TPWD) stocks hatchery-raised trout across the state during the coldest months of the year, when trout can survive long enough for local anglers to catch them.
The Greater Austin area, including Travis, Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, and Williamson counties, is on the trout route, as it were. A good handful of local waters are primed with new trout from late fall through winter.
Besides Austin, residents of this area live in Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Pflugerville, and many smaller communities and rural areas. None are too terribly far from the fresh trout stocked in the locations listed in the table below.
The table below includes waters that at times in recent years have been stocked with trout. Not all waters may be stocked in a given year. Check TPWD’s annual schedule for the comprehensive listing for the current year.
Below the trout table, I’ve included a link to my comprehensive guide to freshwater trout fishing in Texas. It includes my favorite trout-catching techniques as well as a look at some of the entire state’s best trout fishing spots.
